Solar Photovoltaic Panels

Electricity is generated directly from a solar collector. Invented in 1953; by Bell Laboratories (now AT & T). Scientists Gerald Pearson, Daryh Chapin and Calvin Fuller created the earliest form of photovoltaic when they found the sun's heat could cause electrons to move. Photovoltaic collectors are today now commonly found on watches and calculators.

In many parts of Ireland photovoltaics are used for parking meters, emergency phones and mobile signage, particularly for road works.

Offspring is currently in talks with a manufacture to supply photovoltaic systems to Ireland.

Stand alone systems produce power independently of the electricity grid network. Direct coupled systems operate only during daylight hours. Therefore systems rely on battery storage so that energy produced during the day can be used at night. Offspring can supply the whole system including battery and inverters.

Grid connected photovoltaic systems supply surplus power into the grid and electricity is drawn from the grid at periods when demand in the house exceeds the photovoltaic output. These systems remove the need for battery storage. In some cases utility companies allow additional metering which allows the owner to sell excess power to the utility company. This is known as 'net billing' and is widely available in Europe but not yet in Ireland. It is far more cost effective for the residential property user.
